Hello! :-) it has been such a long time since I have written on my blog... I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and that y'all have a wonderful New Year.
On January 6th 2012 I had my 19th hip surgery... this year January 6th 2013 it will have been a full year since my surgery.
I have been going to therapy and I have been trying to get my hip back to as normal as it can go... and it is hard to do.. and it hurts A LOT but I think that I am doing good with the progress.
I am so glad that I am actually able to walk.. even though I am not allowed to do any school dances or PE... that is perfectly fine with me because I don't like to sweat at all!! ;-)
I am so thankful for my supportive family and especially for my Mom because she has never stopped being my #1 Cheerleader and my leading example.
'Til next time,
Miss Hip and Sassy (Bailey)
p.s. this year I will be 14! :-) woo hooo :-)

...and....We're walkin!
HOORAY!!!! We're walking! Yes, Dr. Rosenfeld...when she came home on Wednesday she started doing it all on her own!
You know that moment when your kids were little and you were waiting for them to take their first steps, you would watch them eagerly...camera in hand? You would hold your breath and just pray that they didn't fall? How lucky are we that we get to have this moment repeat itself throughout Bailey's life? :)
She would shoot me if I posted the video so you will just have to take my word for it...she is up on two feet! YAY! I am also impressed with how she looks when she stands on both feet...this may sound odd so allow me to explain. Prior to surgery, you could see an obvious protrusion of her hip on the left side...now, she looks to be more svelt and even on both sides.
Now, it is back to school for half days for just a bit to help her build her stamina and get back in the swing of things. She will be going to school in her wheelchair...I don't trust those lil toots not to knock her over. You would think they would be nice but apparently empathy isn't something taught in most households. Even "friends" that have spent the night, swam for endless hours, etc. are pretty mean. That's okay though...as I have told Bailey...Karma is a strict mistress!
Can't wait to see my Bay jumping in the pool and running around like a (almost) 13 yr old girl should do!
Blessings to you and yours from me and mine...!

I am excited because next week is Spring Break and I am going to the zoo with my little sister and the livestock show and carnival with my family... I am excited to go shopping and eat junk food!!! But then I am nervous because next week on Wednesday I am going to the doctor and I will start taking my first steps again. :-) I am happy to walk but I am nervous about starting again because I havent walked in 3 months and its going to be hard the 1st time but I bet that I will like it. :-) I am also excited to start walking so that I can get my sassy shake back (mom says, "WHAT?!?!?") and so that I can baby-sit again and so that I can play with dogs!!! :-)
I hope that all of y'all have a good week and that y'all enjoy Spring Break next week. :-)
love y'all!!!
Love,

DDH, PAO Surgery...and Post Op X-Ray
Many of you have asked what exactly is PAO surgery...here is the best link I could find.
http://www.wfuhip.com/PAO.html
Most of the people that have had this surgery are women in their late twenties and early thirties. They go on to run marathons, have children, dance and the like. I have researched this a lot, and whenever I see their pre-op x-rays, I think..."WOW! I wish Bailey's would have looked like this...!" It seems that Bailey's case was quite a bit different than those that I have read about online. She had what I think they term a complete dislocation. She had NO hip socket at all, and all of the surgeries that she had when she was a toddler were to build a hip socket for her. I know that Bailey will go on to experience all of the great things in life, and she will be the topic of conversation by the pool with her surgical scars. (Which by the way, she is very eager to keep...!)
Bailey is certainly on the younger end of the spectrum for this surgery...but this was the last step before a total hip replacement. Below is her post op x-ray...
As I have mentioned in earlier posts...Bailey's DDH could have and should have been caught during infancy. In my (professional mom) opinion, the tests that the pediatricians perform to look for this issue is quite subjective. I feel strongly that the infants should be given an ultrasound to check their hips vs. doctors moving their legs to TRY and feel a click. My younger daughter had an ultrasound at 4 weeks of age...she too had DDH, we put double diapers on her for several weeks and her hips are perfect...! (I understand now that they no longer do this, they go to the Pavlik Harness.)
Now that Bailey is getting stronger, my quest will be to increase awareness and to rally for better testing. While I am told that a small degree of boys do have DDH, the higher percentage is in girls...if you know of a baby girl, or have one yourself, please look for the warning signs and look for a doctor that will listen to you. This situation is best diagnosed and treated prior to 6 mos of age.
The warning signs (that I know of) are:

The warning signs (that I know of) are:
- assymetrical thigh
- not putting any weight on that leg (when sitting up after crawling)
- a bowing and the hips when standing (hard to tell sometimes in the diaper...)
- an odd gait when they start to walk

...and puppy makes 5...
Hip and Sassy Momma (or should I say CRAZY Momma?) made good on her promise of a puppy...and Bailey is just as pleased as punch! We introduced Gracie-Loo to the family last Thursday. (I call her Gracie-Loo Freebush...that annoys Bailey...making it all the more the fun!) :) She is a tiny chihuahua...with a BIG personality.
Gracie-Loo (Freebush) 1.6lbs.
Bailey, Miss Bevo & Gracie-Loo
We are counting the days for our next doctor appointment (during Spring Break)...Bailey is working hard everyday on exercising so that she can start therapy soon. She spends a lot of time making lists of the things she wants to do, and wear as well as the places she wants to go when she is well. I am so very proud of my baby...she has a great attitude and it seems that her recovery is coming along nicely. I know Gracie-Loo is helping a lot too!
Blessings to you and yours from me and mine!

Public Service Announcement
Okay - allow me to get on my soapbox for a moment...but before I do, a quick Bailey update. She is doing well. She is "back to school" in that her homebound teacher is coming to the house now and she is getting caught up with her school work. Her pain is manageable...it was actually much better last week but now she is starting to move her leg more and seems that seems to be cause for some complaints.
Now, on to the soap box. Have you ever cruised a parking lot looking for a space and wondered where all the "handicapped" parkers have "run" off to? ME TOOO! More often than not we cannot find a handicap parking spot! We will park WAAAAAY out in the parking lot and unload and walk into the store or doctor office expecting to see a whole host of people in walkers, wheelchairs, and the like but I can't seem to find a one! Then you see those parkers (more often than not) getting into their cars on two good legs, with two good arms...I'm not a medical professional, but in my personal observation, I could see them walking a few extra steps from regular parking in addition to their perusal of LARGE discount department stores. Do they give these placards away like candy? THEN! Worse than that, you pull up to a restaurant or store that has a host of handicap parking and NO ACCESSIBILITY! You can't get in the door with a wheelchair, you can't access the restroom, the aisles and more! This just burns me up! I would really like to speak with the city/county to find out what the expectations are of public places and their accessibility.
Last thing...I have recently learned that the general population is overall a bit on the lazy side. I am unloading Bailey at Target for an outing (best place to kill some time and get rid of cabin fever) and this woman pushes and parks her cart right in the wheelchair lane! GRRRRR!
Honestly, I probably wouldn't have thought alot about this before I was forced to utilize these "services"...so this is my public service message. I cannot imagine those that are permanently disabled...how frustrating it must be for them! Not sure how to go about making changes...but it needs to happen.

Post Op Appointment and "I Stand Corrected"
Hooray! Here we are, two weeks post op and Bailey is doing great! Dr. Rosenfeld said she is right on track and making great progress. She will start physical therapy in 6 weeks.
Dr.Rosenfeld also mentioned (after reading this blog) that the surgery that was done at Shriners is a typical step in this process so the "undoing" of said surgery is typical. I stand corrected and I am greatly relieved to know that it wasn't a futile effort several years ago.
Many of you have asked what exactly is PAO surgery. I have found several links that I will post here soon.
